May 9th is National Letter Carrier’s Food Drive

Marion County, we need your help!

For the last 23 years, postal workers all across the country have hosted their Stamp Out Hunger food drive.  It has quickly become the largest single-day drive both nationally as well as locally in our own backyard.  Please mark your calendars for May 9th for this year’s drive. Below, you’ll find some Questions & Answers that can help you learn more:

When do I put out the food?  On Saturday May 9th, before your letter carrier’s normal pick-up time. Note that he or she will be delivering and collecting mail as usual, on top of collecting food donations, so that pickup time could be slightly later than usual.

Do I need to use a special bag?  No special bags are needed. Paper is sturdy and tends to hold more food, while plastic holds up better if it gets wet (in the rain, etc.). Cloth bags or boxes are also fine.

I received a special Food Drive bag in the mail; do I have to use only that bag?  You can if you want to, but any bag is just fine.

Does every letter carrier take part in the Food Drive? As much as we would like every letter carrier to take part—and a sizable majority of them do—some letter carriers opt not to take part, for a variety of reasons. Note that letter carrier participation in the food drive is strictly voluntary.

Can I donate baby food, too?  Yes! Our pantries provide food to everyone in need.

Can I donate toiletries or other personal care items, too? It is primarily a food drive, but if you also want to give personal care items such as those, in addition to your regular donation, we can distribute them as well. Does my food donation stay local? Yes—all food stays right here in Marion County.

Can I give money in addition to (or instead of) food? Yes! Donations for food can be made to “Interfaith” and mailed to PO Box 992, Ocala, FL 34478.  Indicate “mail carrier’s drive” on your memo.

Are my donations tax-deductible?  If you would like a receipt for your food or monetary donation, please deliver your items directly to Interfaith, where we can provide a tax receipt.

How can I help out (besides donating food)?  If you would like to volunteer with food distribution and sorting, or in any other capacity:

1. Join us in praying for an overflowing harvest so more can be fed and aided in their time of need.

2. Encourage your churches, friends, neighbors, relatives, clubs and youth groups to volunteer at our warehouse on the day of the mail drive as a group (service hours for High School students apply).

3. Volunteer as a driver to pick up food.  Routes and collection times will be provided by calling our warehouse at 352-622-4204. From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank our postal workers, volunteers and you, the donor, for your diligent assistance in this good work.

Thank you in advance for your participation in the food drive.  And be sure to thank your postal carrier for their hard work.  Together, we can help stock our shelves for the summer months!
